How it Works

The Solid Waste Management Process

🚛
STEP 1

Vehicle Arrives

The Swachh Ratham tours the streets on a scheduled basis. Its arrival is announced via loudspeakers ("Swachh Ratha Sarathi"), alerting residents.

⚖️
STEP 2

Weighing & Valuation

The operator collects dry waste. The waste is weighed on a digital scale for transparency. The value is calculated based on government prices.

🛍️
STEP 3

Barter Exchange

No cash is exchanged. The resident chooses groceries (pulses, soaps, oil) from the "mobile shop" equal to the waste value.

Solid Waste Solution

What is it? (Swachh Ratham) A flagship "Waste-to-Wealth" initiative by the Andhra Pradesh Government designed to promote a circular economy through a mobile barter system.

1. Core Concept: The Barter System
  • Operates as a mobile exchange shop rather than traditional collection.
  • Residents "buy" groceries by surrendering dry waste (plastic, paper, iron).
  • Transparent government pricing often exceeds local private scrap rates.
2. Infrastructure & Logistics
  • Uses repurposed Mobile Dispensing Units (MDUs) for door-to-door service.
  • Scaling from a 25-vehicle pilot to a state-wide fleet of 100 Rathams.
  • Operators receive ₹25,000/month for maintenance and operations.
3. Execution & Vision
  • Managed by Swachh Ratha Sarathis and supported by Community Resource Persons.
  • Collected waste is processed at Solid Wealth Processing Centres (SWPC).
  • Supports the goal of a Garbage-Free AP by Jan 2026 and Plastic-Free by June 2026.
